Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This Airworthiness Directive requires operators of Saab 340B aeroplanes fitted with Hamilton Sunstrand (Hamilton Standard) propellers to inspect RCCBs 29KFC and 30KFC and, if they are not Part Number M83383-01-09 (50 Amp), replace them by 31 July 2002. The stated purpose is to ensure the propeller feather pump system has the correct 50 Amp circuit protection rather than the 35 Amp units used for Dowty propellers; compliance must follow Saab Service Bulletin 340-61-038 (30 Jan 2002).

For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.1 (1) of CAR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

AD/SF340/85 Propeller Remote Controlled Circuit Breakers 5/2002

Applicability: Model 340B aeroplanes equipped with Hamilton Sunstrand (Hamilton Standard) propellers.

Requirement: If not previously accomplished, inspect Remote Controlled Circuit Breakers (RCCB) 29KFC and 30KFC to ensure that Part Number (P/N) M83383-01-09 (50 Amp) circuit breakers are installed. If an incorrect P/N RCCB is installed, replace the RCCB with a P/N M83383-01-09 circuit breaker. The above actions are to be accomplished in accordance with Saab Aircraft AB Service Bulletin 340-61-038 dated 30 January 2002.

Note: LFV AD 1-172 refers.

Compliance: Before 31 July 2002.

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 16 May 2002.

Background: All 340B aeroplanes equipped with Hamilton Sunstrand (Hamilton Standard) propellers have 50 Amp RCCBs installed during production, but the IPC refers to 35 Amp RCCB which are specific to Dowty propellers. The inspection is required to ensure the correct RCCB is installed, thus providing the correct circuit protection for the propeller feather pump system on aeroplanes equipped with Hamilton Sunstrand (Hamilton Standard) propellers.
