Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This Airworthiness Directive applies to specific SAAB SF340 series aircraft (serial numbers 340A-003 through 340A-048). It requires operators to modify the rudder limiter — a safety mechanism that restricts how far the aircraft's rudder (the vertical steering surface on the tail) can move.

What must be done: Aircraft owners must carry out the modifications specified in the manufacturer's Service Bulletin SF340-27-018. This involves reducing how much the rudder can deflect (move) when the aircraft is flying at high speeds.

Why it matters: Testing showed that the existing rudder travel limits at high speeds did not fully meet safety certification standards. Limiting rudder movement prevents pilots from accidentally over-stressing the aircraft structure or losing control during high-speed flight.

Who is affected: Operators of SAAB SF340 aircraft within the specific serial number range listed above.

Applicability: All models with S/Nos. 340A-003 to -048.

Requirement: Action in accordance with SAAB-Fairchild S.B. SF340-27-018.

Note: Swedish AD No 1-006 refers.

Compliance: Prior to 31 October 1985.
