What it does
This instrument is Airworthiness Directive AD/SF340/105 (5/2008) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) delegate. It mandates repeat functional checks of the landing gear emergency extension valve on SAAB AB, Saab Aerosystems SAAB SF340A and SF340B aeroplanes, and demands restoration of functionality if discrepancies are found (Requirement). The check must be performed in accordance with either SAAB Service Bulletin SB 340-32-136 (or a later National Aviation Authority approved revision) or the SAAB 340 Maintenance Review Board (MRB) Report, Section F, Revision 6, task number 323106.2. The directive also points users to the SAAB 340 Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM), Chapter 32, for a full system description (Requirement).
Compliance timing is set out in two parts. First, operators must perform the functional check within 6 months after the AD’s effective date and then repetitively at intervals not to exceed two years (Compliance, item 1). Second, where any discrepancies are found during those checks, the AD requires that functionality be restored before further flight after the AD’s effective date (Compliance, item 2). The AD becomes effective on 8 May 2008 (Compliance).
The AD cites a safety rationale in its Background. Several valves were found seized during checks carried out under the MRB task, and SAAB identified internal lack of lubrication as the cause. SAAB has revised the check procedure to include cycling the emergency release handle five times and has amended the MRB interval from a flight-hour based interval of 5,000 flight hours to a calendar-based interval of every two years. The AD adopts the newly established interval and check procedure indirectly by mandating the SB or MRB task referenced (Background). The document also notes that EASA AD 2008-0054 dated 5 March 2008 is relevant (Requirement note).
