What it does
This instrument is an airworthiness directive (AD) addressing corrosion and cracking of certain control cable end fittings on Short Brothers PLC SD3‑60 aeroplanes. It prescribes mandatory inspections of the affected cable assembly end fittings, requires replacement where pitting, corrosion or cracking is found, and sets inspection intervals for continued airworthiness. The AD specifies the inspection method as Short Brothers PLC Service Bulletin (SB) SD360‑76‑A12 Revision 1 or a later EASA‑approved revision, and it cross‑refers EASA Emergency AD 2007‑0039‑E. The AD identifies the affected hardware as MS21260 type end fittings used on engine and landing gear control cables, and links the unsafe condition to stress corrosion cracking of SAE‑AISI 303 stainless steel, initiated by pitting corrosion in corrosive atmospheres (warm, humid and salty).
Mechanically, the AD imposes the following requirements (as stated in the AD text):
- Requirement 1: Inspect the affected cable assembly end fittings in accordance with SB SD360‑76‑A12 Rev 1 or later EASA‑approved revision (Compliance 1: no later than 9 March 2007).
- Requirement 2: If no pitting/corrosion or cracking is found, repeat the inspection per Requirement 1 (Compliance 2: within 12 months of the original inspection and thereafter at intervals not to exceed 12 months).
- Requirement 3: If pitting/corrosion or cracking is found during the inspections in Requirement 1 or 2, replace the affected cable assembly with a new cable assembly (Compliance 3: before further flight after the effective date of this AD).
- Requirement 4: Repeat inspection of any new cable assembly end fittings in accordance with SB SD360‑76‑A12 Rev 1 or later EASA‑approved revision (Compliance 4: after replacement at intervals not to exceed 15 years).
