What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) affecting Short Brothers PLC SD3-30 aeroplanes. Mechanically, it mandates inspection and, where necessary, replacement of specific cable assembly end fittings used in engine and landing gear control systems. The directive requires operators to:
- Inspect the affected cable assembly end fittings in accordance with Short Brothers PLC Service Bulletin (SB) SD330-76-A09 Revision 1 or a later EASA‑approved revision (Requirement 1).
- If no pitting, corrosion or cracking is found, repeat the inspection in accordance with Requirement 2 (which is to be carried out within 12 months of the original inspection and thereafter at intervals not to exceed 12 months) (Requirement 2; Compliance 2).
- If pitting, corrosion or cracking is found during the inspection, replace the affected cable assembly with a new cable assembly before further flight (Requirement 3; Compliance 3).
- Repeat the inspection of any new cable assembly end fittings in accordance with Short Brothers PLC SB SD360-76-A09 Revision 1 or a later EASA‑approved revision (Requirement 4; Compliance 4).
The AD text identifies the specific end fitting type implicated, MS21260, and explains the technical failure mechanism found by Bombardier Shorts: stress corrosion cracking of SAE‑AISI 303 stainless steel initiated by pitting corrosion, driven by sustained tensile stress in a warm, humid, salty atmosphere (Background). The directive became effective 23 February 2007, and the initial mandatory inspection deadline is set no later than 9 March 2007 (Compliance 1). The AD cites an EASA Emergency AD (2007‑0039‑E dated 16 February 2007) as a related document (Requirement note).
The instrument therefore changes operator duties by imposing a specific inspection schedule, a mandatory immediate replacement requirement if specified defects are found, and a follow‑up inspection regime for replaced assemblies. It ties those duties to manufacturer service bulletins (specified SB numbers and revisions) and to EASA approval of later revisions. The directive was issued by a CASA delegate and signed on 20 February 2007; the AD identification is AD/SD3‑30/49, 4/2007 TX.
