What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD) mandates the mandatory replacement of a specific batch of threaded attachment bolt assemblies (Part Number 332A54.2009.01) used on the engine/main gearbox (MGB) coupling shaft flange of Eurocopter AS 332 Super Puma series helicopters. The AD, issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) on 9 October 2008 and effective from 20 November 2008, arises from a manufacturing non-conformity discovered in these bolts after they were introduced as an intended improvement over an earlier design. The background notes that the new bolts were meant to provide a longer threaded section to address prior anomalies that had no safety risk. However, the actual manufacturing deviation produced an additional length in the plain bolt shaft section, making it impossible to correctly tighten the flange on the MGB side of the coupling shaft. On the engine side, installation remained possible but with uncertain torque tightness efficiency. The concern is that early torque loss could lead to bolt failure and loss of the corresponding MGB input drive, with abnormal noise as a possible crew warning.
Mechanically, the AD imposes four requirements with different compliance times. Requirement 1 applies where the affected bolts were installed on the engine side of both engine/MGB coupling shafts: those 12 bolts (6 per shaft) must be replaced within 50 flight hours after the effective date. Requirement 2 applies where the bolts were fitted on only one shaft: replacement within 100 flight hours. Requirement 3 takes effect immediately from the AD's effective date, prohibiting further installation of the affected parts. Requirement 4 mandates that removed bolts be returned to Eurocopter Marignane within 7 days. The AD references Eurocopter AS332 Alert Service Bulletin No. 01.00.71 revision 1 and notes alignment with European Aviation Safety Agency AD 2007-0134.
