What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/S-PUMA/77, issued 28 May 2008 by a delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority) mandates a specific set of inspection, marking, and replacement actions for CPI 503 Crash Position Indicator (CPI) beacon components installed on Eurocopter AS 332 L1 and AS 332 L2 helicopters. The directive is triggered by reports of uncontrolled CPI beacon deployments on the ground, attributed to insufficient electrical bonding between the beacon components and the helicopter structure, which makes the system sensitive to electromagnetic interference. Uncontrolled deployment creates a risk of injury to persons on the ground, particularly during hoisting or sling operations where electrostatic discharges may occur when the cable contacts the ground.
Mechanically, the AD requires operators to: (1) identify affected CPI beacon components by serial number as listed in Eurocopter Alert Service Bulletin AS332 No. 25.01.97 (or later EASA‑approved revision); (2) measure the electrical bonding of those components according to H.R. Smith Service Bulletin HRS170407‑2; (3) mark the component’s serial number with the letter “C” if the bonding measurement meets the specified criteria; and (4) if the bonding measurement fails, take corrective actions that differ depending on whether the helicopter is fitted with removable hoist/sling parts or only fixed structural provisions for hoist/sling.
For helicopters with a hoist or sling actually fitted (removable parts), a failed bonding measurement requires immediate disengagement of the hoist or sling circuit‑breakers, installation of a placard in full view of the flight crew, prohibition of hoist and sling operation until replacement, and replacement of affected components within three months of the effective date. For helicopters with only fixed parts (structural provisions for future hoist/sling installation), a failed measurement requires replacement of components before installing the hoist/sling or within three months, whichever occurs first. The AD also prohibits installation of any spare CPI beacon component that does not already have its serial number marked with “C” unless its bonding is first checked and passes.
