What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/S‑PUMA/67) requires recurring inspections of the main gearbox (MGB) main casing right-hand face and prescribes mandatory replacement of the MGB if an oil leak is found. It applies to Eurocopter AS 332 series helicopters , specifically AS 332 C, AS 332 C1, AS 332 L and AS 332 L1 , on all serial numbers, but only where the helicopter is averaging more than four torque variation cycles per flight hour (applicability statement). The inspection is a visual check for the absence of oil leaks on the MGB main casing RH face, to be carried out in accordance with paragraph 2.B of Eurocopter AS 332 Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) No. 05.00.66.2 or a later DGAC‑approved revision (requirement).
Timing is expressed in both flight hours and torque cycles. The initial inspection must be performed within the next 20 flight hours or 400 torque cycles, whichever occurs first, after the AD’s effective date (which the AD states is 4 December 2006). Thereafter, inspections must be repeated at intervals not exceeding 110 flight hours or 2,200 torque cycles, whichever occurs first (compliance). If the visual check detects no oil leak, the AD directs the operator to resume flight in accordance with paragraph 2.B.2.a of the ASB; if an oil leak is found, the MGB must be replaced before further flight, in accordance with paragraph 2.B.2.b of the ASB. The AD expressly states that replacement of the MGB does not terminate the repetitive inspection requirement of the AD (requirement, note).
The AD cross‑refers to, and incorporates by reference, Eurocopter ASB No. 05.00.66.2 (or later DGAC‑approved revisions) for the procedural details of the visual check and for the required actions depending on findings. It also refers to EASA Emergency AD 2006‑0361‑E (dated 30 November 2006). The AD is signed by a delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (James Coyne) and became effective 4 December 2006.
