What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD), AD/S‑PUMA/61 dated 9/2005 and effective 1 September 2005, mandates inspection and corrective action for engine fire extinguishers fitted to specified Eurocopter AS 332 (Super Puma) series helicopters. It applies to AS 332 C, C1, L, L1 and L2 helicopters equipped with engine fire extinguishers having part number 863490‑00 that are pre‑MOD 0726371. The AD identifies a set of serial numbers manufactured in 2001 (a discrete list of 21 serials) and then states that all serial numbers manufactured after 2001 are included in the applicability. The Directive requires operators to weigh the nominated fire extinguishers in accordance with paragraph 2.B.2. of EUROCOPTER AS 332 Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) No. 05.00.62, and then to either embody MOD 0726371 (which results in a changed fire extinguisher part number 863490‑01) following paragraph 2.B.3. of the ASB, or otherwise comply with the ASB instructions corresponding to MOD 0726371. Fire extinguishers held as spares with part number 863490‑00 must similarly be weighed before installation. The compliance schedule imposes short‑interval checks (weighing) , initially within 110 flying hours or 2 months, whichever comes first , and repeating at specified intervals until the MOD or equivalent compliance is completed; the MOD embodiment must be completed within six months for the listed pre‑2001 batch. For units manufactured after 2001 the MOD or proof test timing is linked to the next scheduled proof test no later than five years following manufacture or the last proof test. The AD cites as its technical trigger cases of loss of extinguisher weight caused by leaks due to corrosion under welded identification plates and cross‑references DGAC AD F‑2005‑094 with EASA approval No. 2005‑4742 dated 31 May 2005. The AD was issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) delegate, David Villiers, on 21 July 2005.
