What it does
This instrument is Airworthiness Directive AD/S-PUMA/58 Amendment 1, issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority delegate on 2 September 2005 and made effective on 10 September 2005. It prescribes mandatory inspection and removal actions relating to the swashplate bearing attaching screw heads on Eurocopter AS 332 L2 (Super Puma) main rotor mast assemblies. The directive requires checks to be performed "in accordance with paragraph 2.B. of Eurocopter Alert Telex (AT) 62.00.66 R1 or later DGAC approved revision" and specifies distinct obligations for installed main rotor mast assemblies and for main rotor mast assemblies held as spares (including those with more than 750 flying hours since new or overhaul) (Requirement; Applicability).
Mechanically, the Directive requires:
- A visual or tactile check so that "all screw heads are in place" as set out in paragraph 2.B of Eurocopter AT 62.00.66 R1 (Requirement para 1).
- For spares with more than 750 flying hours, compliance with the instructions detailed in paragraph 2.B of Eurocopter AT 62.00.66 R1 prior to installation (Requirement para 2).
- Immediate removal from service of any main rotor mast assembly installed where "one or more than one screw heads are missing" following the check; and prohibition on installing a spare main rotor mast assembly where missing screw heads are identified (Requirement para 3(a)-(b)).
The compliance schedule is granular and time-sensitive. It sets thresholds and inspection intervals tied to flying hours and past checks: e.g., installations with less than 750 flying hours must be checked by 770 flying hours then at intervals not exceeding 100 flying hours; installed assemblies with 750 or more hours have conditional timing that depends on when they were last checked under the original AD (Compliance). The Directive also repeats immediate pre‑installation and pre‑flight checks as point actions (Compliance para 2 and 3). The background explains the Directive responds to a discovered case of broken screw heads which could progress to "a helicopter control loss", and that this Amendment "introduces a periodic inspection of the swashplate bearing attaching screw heads integrity" while incorporating the existing requirements of the original Directive (Background).
