What it does
This instrument is an airworthiness directive titled AD/S-PUMA/57 Amdt 1 addressing the tail servo-control on Eurocopter AS 332 (Super Puma) series helicopters. It applies to AS 332 L, L1, C, C1 and AS 332 L2 helicopters fitted with tail servo-controls part number SC7251 before amendment J, or SC7270 before amendment F (Applicability). The directive requires a one-time manual inspection for absence of axial play of two control levers along the distributor shafts of the tail servo-control, and, for servo-controls that have accumulated more than 535 hours time in service since new at the effective date, a tightening torque check as described in Eurocopter AS332 Alert Service Bulletins (ASB) specified in the Requirement section (Requirement 1; paragraphs cited include 2.B.2, 2.B.3, 2.B.4, 2.B.5 of ASBs 67.00.31.2/31.3/31.4/31.5 as referenced).
The amendment preserves the original directive’s one-time inspection and adds follow-up inspections and torque checks. If axial play is found on the manual check, the servo-control must be replaced before resuming flights, in accordance with the ASB instructions (Requirement). The directive also requires that tail servo-controls held as spares undergo the tightening torque check before installation (Requirement).
Timing and sequencing of actions are specified in multiple compliance windows. For installed servo-controls with more than 535 hours TIS at the effective date of the original Directive, the torque check must be carried out within 15 hours TIS after that effective date; for those with less than 535 hours TIS, checks must be completed by no later than 550 hours TIS since new. Other deadlines include no later than 110 flying hours from the effective date for a separate item, and follow-up inspections or checks between 135 and 165 flying hours after the initial checks (Compliance). If axial play is detected, replacement is mandated before further flight; spares must be checked before installation (Compliance items 3, 4, 5).
