Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This is a mandatory safety order (called an Airworthiness Directive) for owners and operators of Sikorsky S-76A helicopters.

What it fixes: The manufacturer discovered that bolts in the tail rotor servo actuator linkage (a critical component that helps steer the helicopter) could become misaligned. This causes "fretting" (wear from rubbing) that could potentially lead to control problems or failure.

What operators must do:

Inspect: Check the affected bolt assembly every 25 hours of flight time, starting by October 31, 1986, and continue these checks every 25 hours until the modification is done
Modify: Install the permanent fix described in two manufacturer service bulletins (Sikorsky Alert Service Bulletin No. 76-67-24 and HR Textron Service Bulletin No. SB272) before November 31, 1986

This directive ensures the tail rotor system operates safely and prevents mechanical failure during flight.
