What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive, cited AD/S-62/11 and dated 4/2005, issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (delegate David Villiers, 2 March 2005) and made effective on 14 April 2005. It mandates the replacement and inspection of main rotor brake discs on Sikorsky S-62 series helicopters that are fitted with certain part numbers. The AD applies to Model S-62 helicopters equipped with part number S6235-20213 or part number 62350-22013-101 rotor brake discs (Applicability). The core mandatory actions are twofold (Requirement):
- Replace part number S6235-20213 rotor brake disc with part number 62350-22013-101 in accordance with Paragraph 2 of Sikorsky Service Bulletin (SB) 62B35-13 or SB 62B35-13A (Requirement, para 1).
- Perform a detailed inspection of the installation of the part number 62350-22013-101 rotor brake disc and perform a dye penetrant inspection for cracking in accordance with Paragraph E(2) of Sikorsky Alert Service Bulletin 62B35-12, subject to two specified deviations: the minimum thickness for the new disc is .449 inches, and the attachment bolt torque is changed per Figures 1 and 2 of SB 62B35-13 (Requirement, para 2).
If cracks are detected during any inspection required by paragraph 2, the AD requires replacement of the disc before further flight, using the applicable maintenance manual; thereafter the Requirement 2 inspection regime is to be resumed (Requirement). The AD sets compliance timing: the initial replacement must be completed, unless already accomplished, before 30 April 2005; the first inspection must be carried out before accumulation of 120 flight hours since new or since the last inspection, with subsequent inspections at intervals not to exceed 120 flight hours (Compliance, paras 1-2). The AD notes that FAA AD 81-06-53 R1 Amdt 39-4303 is referred to (Requirement Note).
