Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

CASA has issued a mandatory Airworthiness Directive for all Rutan Varieze homebuilt aircraft requiring the rudder travel be limited from 3.5" to 2.0" by shortening the cable between the bellcrank and brake arm with final adjustment at the master cylinder. A rigging check—full pedal travel and measuring rudder movement while applying 3–5 lb to the trailing edge—is required. The change prevents a discovered loss-of-control condition and must be done before the next flight.

AD/RUTAN/1 Rudder Travel - Modification NK

Applicability: All models.

Requirement: Reduce rudder travel from 3.5" to 2.0" by shortening vertical cable between top hole of bellcrank P/N VECS15 and brake arm. Make fine adjustment with the fitting on top of master cylinder. Perform rigging check will full rudder pedal deflection, measuring at the top of the rudder while applying a force of 3 to 5 lbs. on the rudder trailing edge.

Compliance: Unless already accomplished, before further flight.

Background: Manufacturer’s flight testing has established that under some circumstances the aircraft experiences loss of control. This can be prevented by limiting rudder deflection.
