Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This Airworthiness Directive (AD) is a mandatory safety order affecting HR 100/200B model Robin aeroplanes.

What it requires:

Install shoulder harnesses on each front seat (if not already fitted)
Ensure the shoulder straps sit at a specific angle after passing over the occupant's shoulder: between 5 degrees below and 30 degrees above the horizontal length of the aircraft (longitudinal axis)

Why it matters: During a crash landing, forces push occupants forward. If the shoulder harness attaches too low (below shoulder level), the straps compress the spine downward, causing serious injury. Proper angling ensures the harness absorbs impact forces safely across the torso.

Technical guidance: Installations following the United States Federal Aviation Administration Advisory Circular 21-34 meet the "acceptable to the Authority" standard.

Compliance deadline: The modifications were required to be completed before 23 December 1994.

AD/ROBIN/18 Shoulder Harness Installation 7/94

Applicability: HR 100/200B models.

Requirement: If not already accomplished, install a shoulder harness to each front seat in accordance with a design acceptable to the Authority. The installation must ensure that the angle of the shoulder straps after passing over the occupant’s shoulder is between 5 degrees below and 30 degrees above the longitudinal axis of the aircraft.

Note: FAA AC 21-34 gives guidance on acceptable harness installations.

Compliance: Prior to 23 December 1994.

Background: In the event of an crash landing, longitudinal loads will cause spinal compression if the attachment position of the shoulder harness is below the occupant’s shoulder.

Refer FAA AC 21-34.
