Plain English Summary

3/10 complexity

This directive mandates repairs to certain Fairchild F800 flight data recorders because a faulty CPU component can produce wrong navigation data or fail without warning, risking loss of critical accident evidence. It applies to operators of affected F800 units with specified part/serial ranges and requires following the manufacturer's bulletin by the deadline or at the next workshop visit. Ensuring these fixes preserves reliable flight-data for investigations.

Note: This modification has been classified as Mandatory by the Bureau of Air Safety Investigation, Department of Transport and Communications.

Compliance: Prior to 31 August 1995 or at the next shop visit for maintenance, whichever occurs earlier.

Background: Loral Data Systems has reported that there have been cases of erroneous track changes which have been isolated to a component on the Central Processor Unit printed wiring assembly and that the component may also prematurely fail when power is applied to the DFDR, these faults may also remain undetected. Compliance with this Directive will ensure that faults are detected and information critical to the investigation of an accident or incident is not lost.
