Plain English Summary

3/10 complexity

This Airworthiness Directive requires operators of aircraft equipped with certain Sundstrand AV-557 series cockpit voice recorders to replace vibration-prone split‑ring electrical sockets with full‑ring sockets per Sundstrand service instructions. It affects specific AV‑557/AV‑557A/AV‑557B/AV‑557C units and is intended to prevent intermittent or false‑positive recorder operation that could leave cockpit audio unrecorded after an accident. Previously compliant modifications under CAO 107 AD/RAD/42 are accepted; otherwise work was required within 2,000 flight hours (effective Feb 1993).

Note: This Directive was originally issued as CAO 107 AD/RAD/42, prior compliance with that Directive is considered compliance with this Directive.

Background: Under conditions of vibration, connectors with split-ring sockets may cause CVRs to operate intermittently, give erroneous self test indications and contribute to sensor or tape-off-reel problems. Replacements are full ring sockets.
