What this requires

This directive orders aircraft operators to inspect and modify specific Fairchild cockpit voice recorders (CVRs) — the "black box" devices that record pilot conversations and cockpit sounds. If you operate an aircraft with a Fairchild Model A100 Series CVR with serial numbers between 4733 and 5260, you must follow the manufacturer's service bulletin to install a missing thermal insulation part.

Who is affected

Aircraft operators with Fairchild Model A100 Series cockpit voice recorders bearing serial numbers 4733 through 5260 inclusive.

Why this matters

These recorders were accidentally built without a specific thermal insulation assembly (part number 9300-A18). Without this insulation, the recording tape could be destroyed by fire during an aircraft accident. Preserving these recordings is essential for accident investigators to determine what went wrong and prevent future crashes. This fix ensures the device can survive a fire, protecting critical evidence.

Compliance: This Directive becomes effective on 4 February 1993.

Background: Thermal insulation assembly PN 9300-A18 was omitted inadvertently from recorders within the serial number range quoted. This insulation must be installed to prevent the possibility of destruction of the recording tape in an aircraft accident involving fire.
