What it does
This Civil Aviation Safety Authority Airworthiness Directive, AD/RB211/46, mandates that operators of specified Rolls‑Royce RB211‑524 engines determine whether particular Rolls‑Royce Service Bulletins apply to their engines, and if so and the work has not already been done, carry out the actions required by those Service Bulletins. Mechanically the Directive:
- Identifies the affected engine models and aircraft installation, namely RB211‑524 B2, C2, D4, G2, H and H‑36 engines installed in Boeing 747 and 767 aircraft as specified in the requirement documents, under the Applicability heading of the Directive.
- Requires a two‑step operational duty, under the Requirement paragraphs: first determine applicability of the Rolls‑Royce Service Bulletins listed in Table 1; second, where a listed Service Bulletin is applicable and has not already been accomplished, perform the actions specified in that Service Bulletin, at the nominated date or at a later approved version.
- Lists three specific Rolls‑Royce Service Bulletins in Table 1, mapped to UK CAA AD identifiers (G‑012‑05‑84, G‑003‑07‑92, G‑009‑01‑98) and showing R‑R SB numbers (72‑6847, 71‑9546, 72‑9764), their publication dates, and brief titles identifying the engine parts or areas addressed: IP and LP compressor location bearings, engine front mount, and combustion section.
- Imposes the operational constraint that the prescribed actions must be complied with before further flight after the effective date of the Directive, with the effective date stated as 8 June 2012 in the Compliance paragraph.
- Records the administrative provenance: the Directive is issued by CASA, is titled State of Design Airworthiness Directives - 1 (11/2012), and is signed by Mike Higgins, Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, dated 25 May 2012; the Background paragraph explains CASA reviewed state‑of‑design ADs and decided to explicitly mandate the UK ADs for Australian aircraft because the actions are once‑only and their compliance dates or periods had already passed.
