What it does
This instrument is an airworthiness directive (AD) directed at specific Rolls-Royce RB211 series turbofan engines that mandates inspection and, where necessary, replacement of the low pressure turbine (LPT) shaft. The AD identifies affected engine models (under "Applicability") and requires operators to: (1) inspect the LPT shaft in accordance with the accomplishment instructions of Rolls‑Royce Non Modification Service Bulletin (NMSB) 72‑AF336; (2) repeat that inspection on a model‑specific interval; and (3) replace any LPT shaft found cracked with a serviceable LPT shaft (see "Requirement"). The directive sets the effective date, provides compliance timing rules keyed to shop visits and installation, and points to an EASA AD for reference (see "Compliance" and the Note referencing EASA AD 2007‑0310R1).
Mechanically, the AD does three things. First, it imposes an inspection obligation tied to a published Rolls‑Royce NMSB: "Inspect the LPT shaft in accordance with the accomplishment instructions of Rolls‑Royce NMSB 72‑AF336" (Requirement 1). Second, it mandates repeat inspections: "Repeat the inspection detailed in Requirement 1 of this AD" (Requirement 2), with maximum intervals expressed in engine cycles for some models and "normal shop visit interval" for others (see the Compliance table). Third, it prescribes mandatory removal and replacement where cracks are found: "All LPT shafts inspected according to Rolls Royce NMSB 72‑AF336 and found to be cracked must be replaced with serviceable LPT shafts" (Requirement 3).
The AD ties immediate action to physical disassembly events rather than pure flight‑hours. For engines that, on the effective date, are already in a shop visit and have had the LPT shaft completely disassembled to piece‑part level and not reprotected with corrosion resistant coating, the inspection is required prior to installation on an aircraft. For all other engines the inspection is required at the next engine shop visit when the LPT shaft is completely disassembled to piece‑part level (Compliance). The AD becomes effective 13 March 2008 and is signed by a CASA delegate (Charles Lenarcic, dated 21 January 2008).
