Plain English Summary

3/10 complexity

What it does: Requires removal and replacement of specified cyclic control parts on Robinson R44 helicopters with serial numbers before 0017, using updated part numbers and FAA‑approved revisions, and completion before issuing a Certificate of Airworthiness.

It affects owners/operators of those R44s who must pay for parts and maintenance downtime. The FAA's stated rationale is the original parts have limited damage tolerance and do not display slow crack growth; the replacements aim to reduce the risk of cyclic control failure.

Compliance: Prior to the issue of a Certificate of Airworthiness.

This Directive is effective from 2 March 1995.

Background: The FAA has determined that the original cyclic control system design meets existing FAA design standards, but has limited damage tolerance characteristics and does not display slow crack growth properties. The actions specified by this AD are intended to prevent failure of the cyclic control system and subsequent loss of control of the helicopter.
