Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This is a mandatory aviation safety instruction (called an Airworthiness Directive) for owners of specific Robinson R22 helicopters.

What it requires: If you own an R22 helicopter with serial numbers 0002 through 0180, you must install special "safety washers" at specific points on the control system. These washers act as a mechanical backup to prevent the control system from disconnecting if a pushrod end bearing fails during flight.

Who must comply: Owners and operators of R22 helicopters with serial numbers between 0002 and 0180 (early production models).

When: The modification must be completed within 100 hours of flight time after 31 August 1981.

Why it matters: Without these safety washers, a single bearing failure could cause the pilot to lose complete control of the helicopter, potentially resulting in a crash. This rule ensures a fail-safe mechanism protects against catastrophic control system failure.
