Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does This directive requires a safety modification to the seat belts (seat harness assemblies) on Robinson R22 helicopters. Specifically, it mandates changes to the latch mechanism on model A628-1 and A628-2 harnesses to prevent the webbing material from wearing out.

Who it affects Anyone who owns or operates Robinson R22 helicopters with serial number 0002 and onwards.

What you must do You must carry out the modification described in Robinson Mandatory Service Bulletin No. 12 within 25 hours of flight time ("time in service") after 23 June 1981, unless you have already done so.

Why it matters The fabric webbing on these harnesses has been observed fraying where it contacts the angled latch. In one accident, the harness webbing actually failed. This modification prevents potential seat belt failure during flight, which could result in serious injury during turbulence or accidents.
