Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This airworthiness directive requires owners/operators of Robinson R22 helicopters to fit a clearly readable cockpit placard stating "LOW-G PUSHOVERS PROHIBITED" and to revise the flight manual to prohibit low‑G cyclic pushovers. Compliance was required before further flight after 7 June 1995. The AD cites an FAA analysis linking low‑G pushovers to mast‑bumping; owners/operators pay to fit an approved placard and update manuals, the AD names Robinson SB 79 as an acceptable means and rejects informal labels.

AD/R22/40 Placard To Prohibit Pushovers 8/95

Applicability: Model R22 helicopters.

Requirement: 1. Install a placard that contains the following statement in the helicopter in clear view of the pilots. The size and location of the placard must be such that it is clearly readable by the pilots:

LOW-G PUSHOVERS PROHIBITED

The placard specified in Robinson R22 SB 79 is an acceptable means of compliance, while a Dymo tape style placard is not.

A Flight Manual revision is required to the effect:

FLIGHT AND MANOEUVRE LIMITATIONS

Low-G cyclic pushovers are prohibited

Note: FAA Priority Letter AD 95-11-09 refers.

Compliance: Prior to further flight after 7 June 1995.

Background: A recent FAA analysis of manufacturers data indicated that a low-G cyclic pushover manoeuvre may result in mast-bumping on the Robinson Helicopter Company R22 helicopter.
