Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this is: A mandatory safety order (an Airworthiness Directive) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority for owners of Robinson R22 helicopters.

What it requires: You must replace faulty sprag clutches (a mechanical one-way bearing component in the rotor system) according to the manufacturer's Service Bulletin 46.

Who it affects: Owners of Robinson R22 series helicopters equipped with the suspect clutches. If your aircraft already has the new A188-2 sprag clutch installed, you are exempt.

Deadline: The replacement must be completed before further flight after 31st January 1986.

Why it matters: Earlier safety bulletins required pilots to perform checks to identify these clutches. This directive makes replacement mandatory because the manufacturer determined the suspect clutches pose a safety risk that inspection alone cannot mitigate.

Amdt 2

Sprag Clutch Replacement 12/85 DM

Applicability: As detailed in the Requirement Document. Requirement: Robinson Service Bulletin 46.

Compliance: Before further flight after 31st January 1986.

Background: SB42A required the owners of the affected rotorcraft to perform certain manoeuvres and checks with their aircraft to determine if it was equipped with one of the suspect clutches. The manufacturer now requires that the affected clutches be replaced.

Aircraft which already have had the new A188-2 sprag clutch installed are excluded.
