Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This is a safety order requiring owners of specific Robinson R22 helicopters to install a guide to stop the engine drive belts (called vee belts) from slipping off their pulleys.

Who it affects: Owners of R22 helicopters with serial numbers 0002 through 0379 that have a specific upper frame part (P/N A020-2 with serial numbers 0002 through 0500) installed.

What you must do: Install a belt guide (as described in the manufacturer's Service Bulletin Number 35) the next time you fit new belts (part number A190-1), and definitely no later than 30 June 1984.

Why it matters: The manufacturer found that new belts were "climbing out" of the grooves in the pulleys (called sheave grooves). When this happens, the helicopter loses all drive power to the main rotor, which could cause the aircraft to crash. This simple guide prevents the belts from dislodging.

AD/R22/19 Vee Belt Guide - Installation 1/84

Applicability: All model R22 with S/Nos. 0002 thru 0379 having P/N A020-2 Upper frame S/Nos.

0002 thru 0500 installed.

Document: Service Bulletin Number 35.

Compliance: When the next set of NEW A190-1 bee belts are installed, but no later than 30 June 1984.

Background: Several instances of newly installed vee belts climbing out of their sheave grooves, with a resulting loss of main transmission drive, has prompted the manufacturer to introduce a guide to prevent the problem.
