What it does
This Airworthiness Directive, AD/PW4000/14 (11/2009), requires removal from service of specified Pratt & Whitney PW4000-series low pressure turbine (LPT) stage 4 disks, part number 51N404, that bear particular serial numbers listed in Table 1 of the AD. The AD is applicable to Pratt & Whitney PW4164, PW4168 and PW4168A turbofan engines when an affected disk is installed. The AD also prohibits installation of any disk P/N 51N404 that has a serial number listed in Table 1, and it prohibits re‑installation of any disk removed pursuant to the AD except as may be permitted by a separately referenced paragraph (h) (the full text of which is not included in the extract provided).
The compliance timeline is explicit. For Requirement 1 (removal from service), the AD mandates removal at the next piece‑part exposure after the AD’s effective date or within 7,500 cycles‑since‑new, unless the actions have already been done. For Requirement 2 (the installation prohibition), compliance is required from the AD’s effective date forward. The AD becomes effective on 22 October 2009.
The AD states the reason for its issue: a report of improperly manufactured LPT stage 4 disks, and it sets out the safety intent: to prevent an uncontained engine failure due to low‑cycle fatigue, which could result in aeroplane damage. The instrument explicitly cross‑references FAA AD 2007‑26‑20 (Amdt 39‑15322, dated 20 December 2007). The AD is signed by a Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (James Coyne) and dated 2 September 2009.
Mechanically, the document directs operators and maintainers to 1) identify affected disks by part number and serial number against the Table 1 list and 2) remove them from service on the stated timing and thereafter not to install them. The AD identifies affected serial numbers in Table 1: CLDLC01142, CLDLC01143, CLDLC01144, CLDLC01145, CLDLC01146, CLDLC01148, CLDLC01149, CLDLC01150, CLDLC01151, CLDLC01152, CLDLC01181, CLDLC01182, CLDLC01183, CLDLC01185, CLDLC01186, and CLDLC01187. Note 1 in the AD states these engines are installed on, but not limited to, Airbus A330‑200 and A330‑300 aeroplanes.
