What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/PW100/12, dated 11/2005) mandates inspection, removal and destruction, or replacement of certain Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) PW100-series propeller shafts identified in Tables 1-4 of Transport Canada AD CF-2005-29. Mechanically, the directive requires four distinct actions depending on which table the propeller shaft appears in:
- Requirement 1: Destroy/discard propeller shafts identified in Tables 1, 2 and 3 of Transport Canada AD CF-2005-29.
- Requirement 2: For propeller shafts listed in Table 4 of that Transport Canada AD, perform a visual inspection for oil leaks per Part A of the Accomplishment Instructions of P&WC Service Bulletin (SB) 21714R2 (dated 20 May 2005) or later Transport Canada approved revisions. If an oil leak is found, follow the Engine Maintenance Manual Corresponding Fault Isolation Chart for oil leaks from the propeller shaft area and, depending on whether the leak can be fixed without removing the propeller, either return the engine to service or proceed to Requirement 3. If no oil leak is found, the engine may be returned to service.
- Requirement 3: For Table 4 propeller shafts, perform an internal inspection per Part B of the Accomplishment Instructions of P&WC SB 21714R2 (or later approved revisions). If a crack is found on internal inspection, remove and discard the shaft and install a new shaft per Part C of the SB; if no crack is found, the engine may be returned to service.
- Requirement 4: Propeller shafts listed in Table 4 must be removed and destroyed/discarded by 31 December 2007.
The AD sets hard compliance times. Some inspections must be done within five days of the AD’s effective date (27 October 2005) and, for the initial visual inspection on Table 4 shafts, the visual check must be repeated weekly until the shaft is removed from service. Internal inspections must be completed within 250 flight hours or not more than three months after the AD’s effective date, whichever occurs first. The AD explicitly prohibits extensions or alternate means of compliance. The directive makes compliance with specific parts of P&WC SB 21714R2 mandatory (Parts A, B and C), but Note 2 permits compliance using inspection methods contained in any previous versions of P&WC SB 21714 that existed prior to the AD’s effective date.
