Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What it does: This rule requires replacement of piston pins in specific Pratt & Whitney aircraft engines to prevent mechanical failure.

Who it affects:

Operators of aircraft using Pratt & Whitney Wasp Junior or R985 engines
Only applies when these engines are used for agricultural operations (crop dusting, aerial spraying, etc.)

When you must comply: The replacement must happen before installing the engine in an aircraft, specifically after the engine's next overhaul that takes place after 1 March 1965.

Why it matters: Piston pins connect the piston to the connecting rod in an engine. If they fail, the engine can seize or break apart—particularly dangerous during low-level agricultural flying. This directive mandates a safety upgrade outlined in Pratt & Whitney Service Bulletin 1730.

Key document referenced: Pratt & Whitney SB 1730 (the manufacturer's technical service bulletin specifying the replacement procedure).
