What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/PMC/50) imposes four distinct mechanical obligations on operators and owners of the affected McCauley propeller models. First, it requires installation of a cockpit placard stating in red letters on a white contrasting background with a red border: "Continuous operation between 2,350‑2,450 RPM at or above 24" manifold pressure is prohibited". The placard must be placed as close to the tachometer as possible, with lettering at least 1/8 inch high. Second, it introduces a hard life limit of 10,000 hours total time‑in‑service (TIS) for the C406 and C409 propellers. Any propeller that has already accumulated 10,000 or more hours TIS on the effective date (20 April 2007) must be removed from service immediately. Third, it mandates an initial and repetitive inspection of the propeller blades for damage, using paragraphs 2.B. through 2.F. of McCauley Propeller Systems Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) No. ASB248 dated 19 April 2005, and repair of any damage found. Fourth, it requires life‑limit‑stamping the letter "L" on both the propeller hub and blades, using paragraph 3 of the same ASB. The directive is triggered by manufacturer testing that identified stress conditions affecting fatigue life and damage tolerance when the propellers are installed on Teledyne Continental Motors IO‑520, TSIO‑520, and IO‑550 series engines. The stated purpose is to prevent blade or hub failure that could result in a propeller blade separating and loss of control of the aeroplane. The AD references FAA AD 2007‑08‑04 and is issued under the authority of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.
