Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This is an Airworthiness Directive — a mandatory safety order issued by the aviation regulator that requires aircraft owners to check for a specific defect.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of Pitts S-1S aeroplanes (small, single-seat aerobatic biplanes) manufactured by Aerotek Inc. in Afton, Wyoming.

What you must do: Inspect the rudder cable (the wire that controls the tail rudder and steers the aircraft) within 5 hours of flying time after 19 May 1976. The inspection must follow the procedures outlined in Pitts Service Bulletin No. 9 (a manufacturer-issued technical notice).

Why it matters: Rudder cables are essential for controlling the aircraft. If they snap or fail, the pilot cannot steer the plane, creating a serious risk of crash. This directive forces operators to check for a specific wear or manufacturing defect identified in these models.
