This is a mandatory safety order (called an Airworthiness Directive) for anyone who owns or operates a Pitts S-1 or S-2 series aeroplane—these are small, aerobatic biplanes commonly used for air shows and flight training.

What you must do: Install a safety lock or tether (a "positive retention device") on the main fuel tank filler cap to prevent it from falling off during flight.

Applicability: All model S-1 and S-2 series aeroplanes.

Requirement: Install a positive retention device for the main fuel tank cap using a means acceptable to the Secretary.

Compliance: Before further flight after 30 June 1984.

Background: Engine failure from fuel exhaustion has occurred when the main fuel tank cap was lost in-flight.
