Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this is: A mandatory safety order (called an Airworthiness Directive) issued by the aviation regulator requiring specific aircraft owners to fix a dangerous mechanical defect.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of Pitts S-1S aerobatic aircraft with serial numbers 1-001 through 1-0060.

What you must do: Modify the front horizontal stabiliser support tube (a structural part connecting the tail to the fuselage). You must follow the instructions in Pitts Aerobatics Service Bulletin No. 14.

Why: The manufacturer discovered cracks in this tube on factory-built aircraft. If left unfixed, the tube could fail and cause loss of control of the aircraft.

When: Within 100 hours of flight time after 31 December 1980 (if not already done).
