Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this requires: This Airworthiness Directive mandates that aircraft operators inspect and rework specific Hamilton Standard propellers fitted to De Havilland Dash 8 and Aerospatiale ATR 42 aircraft. The affected propellers (models 14SF-5 and 14SF-7, part number 792000-3 with specific serial numbers) must be dealt with according to Hamilton Standard Alert Service Bulletin 14SF-61-A22.

Why it matters: During manufacture, the bearing race seats and bolt torque plate seat were incorrectly "shot peened" (a surface hardening process using small metal beads). This manufacturing defect could compromise the structural integrity of the propeller hub, potentially creating a safety risk.

Who must comply: Operators of aircraft fitted with these specific propeller models, particularly Dash 8 and ATR 42 aircraft.

Compliance deadline: The work had to be completed by 30 April 1989, or before the propeller reached 200 hours of flight time—whichever came first (unless already done).
