What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/PC-6/51 Amdt 1), issued by the delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and effective 4 August 2005, requires inspection and selective replacement of stabiliser‑trim attachment and related structural components on Pilatus PC‑6 series aeroplanes as specified in the instrument. The directive directs operators to perform an inspection for crack damage in the applicable stabiliser‑trim attachment components in accordance with Pilatus Aircraft Service Bulletin No. 53‑001 Revision 1, dated 1 June 2005. If cracks are detected during that inspection, any crack‑damaged component must be replaced before further flight. The AD also mandates replacement without inspection of specific components: Fairchild connecting pieces part number 6232.0026.xx installed in Configuration 2 aircraft must be replaced with Pilatus connecting pieces; fittings having part number 116.40.06.033 without an index must be replaced with either 116.40.06.033 with an index or with part number 116.40.06.112. The AD sets the compliance window at the next 100‑hour inspection or within three months after 4 August 2005.
Mechanically, the instrument (a) obliges an inspection step tied to a particular Pilatus service bulletin (SB No. 53‑001 Rev 1, 1 June 2005); (b) imposes mandatory replacement of any cracked parts before the affected aeroplane may next fly; and (c) requires unconditional replacement, without prior inspection, of specified part numbers and connecting pieces. The AD also states that the mandated replacement of certain part number fittings "provides terminating action for the repetitive inspections required by HB‑86‑042 (AD/PC‑6/40)." The directive was prompted by an in‑service failure of the lower attachment bracket of the horizontal stabiliser that led to an emergency landing; the AD records that such failure could result in loss of control.
