What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) labelled AD/PC-12/51, dated 11/2007, issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) concerning Pilatus PC-12 series aeroplanes. Mechanically, it mandates two inspections and, where affected bolts are found, compulsory replacement of those bolts. The inspections target specific "special bolts" that attach the main landing gear (MLG) retraction actuators and the shock absorbers to the MLG assemblies, and they extend to MLG assemblies, bolts, and modification kits held as spares. The AD instructs inspection to identify bolts with serial numbers that start with the letters "AT" or that have a supplier code "AT", in accordance with paragraph 3.A. of Pilatus Service Bulletin (SB) No. 32-020; if affected bolts are identified, the AD requires replacement with new bolts having new part numbers in accordance with paragraph 3.B. of SB No. 32-020. The AD also requires inspection of spares and kits in accordance with paragraph 4. of SB No. 32-020, and replacement of any affected bolts found there.
The AD specifies its applicability with precision: it applies to "All Model PC-12, PC-12/45 and PC-12/47 aircraft, with Manufacturer Serial Number 101 through MSN 749" when equipped with MLG assemblies and special bolts of the listed part numbers delivered before 31 December 2006, and to those same items when held as spares (the AD lists multiple MLG assembly part numbers, special bolt part numbers, and modification kit numbers). It becomes effective on 25 October 2007 and sets a compliance window of "within 100 hours time in service or 3 months after 25 October 2007, whichever occurs first," for both Requirement 1 (the in-service inspection and replacement if affected) and Requirement 2 (the inspection of spares and kits and replacement if affected).
The AD also gives a stated safety rationale: Pilatus determined that certain MLG bolts may suffer hydrogen embrittlement, reducing their fatigue life and potentially leading to MLG collapse during operation unless detected and corrected. The AD cross-references Pilatus SB No. 32-020 for inspection and replacement procedures and notes the related Swiss FOCA AD HB-2007-382.
