What it does
Mechanically, this Airworthiness Directive (AD/PC-12/46) imposes a mandatory inspection and, where applicable, replacement requirement on specified Pilatus PC‑12 and PC‑12/45 aeroplanes and specified landing gear assemblies. The AD: (a) identifies the affected aeroplane models and the exact part numbers and serial‑number ranges of the nose and main landing gear assemblies and main landing gear shock absorber assemblies (Applicability); (b) requires an inspection to determine whether the affected assemblies have serial numbers starting with the letters "AM" and, if any such assemblies are found, requires replacement of the affected component(s) with new parts as specified by Pilatus PC‑12 Service Bulletin No. 32‑16 dated 11 March 2004 or later FOCA approved revisions (Requirement); and (c) sets a compliance window: inspect within 300 hours time in service after 7 July 2005, but not later than 31 December 2005, and notes that the AD becomes effective on 7 July 2005 (Compliance; Effective date).
The AD directs that, before installing any assembly, persons must check compliance with two earlier ADs: AD/PC‑12/30 (PC‑12 SB 32‑012) and AD/PC‑12/38 (PC‑12 SB 32‑015) (Requirement). The AD also records that Switzerland FOCA AD HB‑2005‑168 is referred to (Requirement, Note).
The stated rationale in the AD is traceable to the manufacturer's discovery that an improper cadmium plating process affected certain high‑strength steel landing gear parts. The AD reproduces the manufacturer's finding that the improper plating could produce hydrogen embrittlement, decrease specified fatigue life, and lead to component failure and landing gear collapse during operation (Background). The AD is signed by David Villiers, Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, dated 25 May 2005.
In practice the AD changes operator behaviour by mandating targeted inspections of specific parts and replacement where serial numbers begin with "AM", within a short measured service‑time window. It also requires cross‑checking compliance with two other ADs before reinstallation of any assemblies. The AD does not itself spell out administrative penalties, remediation funding or who supplies replacement parts beyond referencing the Pilatus service bulletin and FOCA approved revisions; the instruction to act and the compliance window are the concrete mechanical mandates contained in the text (Requirement; Compliance).
