What it does
This document is Airworthiness Directive AD/PC-12/43 Amdt 1, dated 2/2006, applying to Pilatus PC-12 and PC-12/45 aeroplanes fitted with specified crew seat backrest tubes. It (1) mandates new component life limits for crew-seat backrest tubes by part number, (2) requires removal and replacement of tubes that have reached those life limits, and (3) requires that all replaced tubes be returned to Pilatus Aircraft Ltd with prescribed identifying information. The amendment sets discrete life limits: backrest tubes on crew seats with a recline system (seat P/Ns 959.30.01.111, 959.30.01.112, 959.30.01.121, 959.30.01.122) have a life limit of 5 000 flying hours; backrest tubes on crew seats without a recline system (seat P/Ns 959.30.01.131, 959.30.01.132, 959.30.01.133, 959.30.01.134) have a life limit of 10 000 flying hours (Requirement). The AD prescribes compliance timing for existing installations: for the recline-system P/Ns, replacement must occur within the next 100 hours time in service after the AD’s effective date but not later than 31 March 2006; for the non-recline P/Ns, replacement must occur within the next 500 hours time in service after the AD’s effective date but not later than 31 March 2006 (Compliance). The amendment becomes effective on 16 February 2006 (Compliance). The AD also records the background safety concern: a maintenance inspection detected failure of a crew seat bucket assembly tube at the energy device pin location, with the upper tube parts disconnected while the lower tubes remained attached, a condition that could reduce pilot control (Background). The AD requires return of replaced tubes to Pilatus Aircraft Ltd, Structural Analysis Group ECE, CH-6371 Stans, Switzerland, with seat P/N and S/N, aircraft MSN, aircraft flying hours and number of flights, and replacement date (Requirement). The document identifies related documents: Switzerland FOCA AD HB-2005-470 and Pilatus PC-12 Maintenance Manual Temporary Revision No. 04-13 (Requirement, Note).
