Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This Airworthiness Directive mandates a critical safety fix for specific Piper PA-46 Malibu aircraft. What it requires: Owners or operators must modify the alternate air control linkage by following the instructions in Piper Service Bulletin No 852. This ensures the backup air intake system can be selected if the primary source fails. Who is affected: Only Piper PA-46 aircraft that previously underwent a specific earlier modification (Service Letter No 985 Part II, dated 18 April 1986). Why it matters: Without this fix, pilots may be unable to switch to alternate induction air when the primary source is blocked, a condition that has already caused two reported engine power losses. Compliance deadline: The work must be completed before the aircraft's next Maintenance Release is issued after 31 January 1987, unless already accomplished.

AD/PA-46/12 Alternate Air Control Linkage 1/87

Applicability: Piper PA-46 aircraft which have complied with Service Letter No 985 Part II, dated 18 April 1986.

Requirement: Action in accordance with Piper Service Bulletin No 852.

Compliance: Unless previously accomplished, prior to the issue of the next Maintenance Release after 31 January 1987.

Background: The manufacturer has determined through engineering tests that conditions may exist that would prevent selection of alternate induction air when the primary air source is cut off. Two reports of engine power loss have been attributed to this condition.
