Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This is a mandatory safety order (called an Airworthiness Directive) for owners of specific light aircraft.

What it does: Requires the replacement of faulty ignition parts—specifically Slick magnetos and condensers—on Piper PA-38 Tomahawk aeroplanes.

Who it affects: Owners or operators of Piper PA-38-112 aircraft fitted with Slick Magneto models 4050, 4051, or 4081.

What you must do: Replace the affected magneto/condenser units following the instructions in Lycoming Service Bulletin No. 432 (or alternatively, Piper Service Bulletin No. 620). These service bulletins are technical repair manuals issued by the engine and aircraft manufacturers.

Why it matters: Faulty magnetos (which generate the electrical spark for the engine) can cause engine failure or rough running. This directive ensures these specific defective components are removed from service to keep the aircraft safe to fly.
