Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This is an Airworthiness Directive — a mandatory safety order from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) requiring aircraft owners to fix a specific mechanical defect.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of Piper PA-38-112 Tomahawk aeroplanes with serial numbers between 38-78A0001 and 38-82A0122.

What the problem is: The manufacturer reported that screws in the carburettor air box valve assembly can vibrate loose during flight. This is dangerous because it can cause:

Loss of carburettor heat (used to prevent engine icing)
Loss of engine power
Loose screws being sucked into the engine

What must be done: Inspect and repair the carburettor air box valve following Piper Service Bulletin No. 851.

When to do it: By the next scheduled periodic inspection after 31 December 1986 (unless already fixed).
