Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This is a safety inspection order for owners of specific Piper PA-38 Tomahawk light aircraft (serial numbers 38-78A0001 through 38-80A0198).

What it requires: Owners must inspect a specific structural part—the Rear Spar Frame Assembly (part number 77467-09) located at Fuselage Station 99.29—for cracks.

Why it matters: These aircraft were experiencing cracking and distortion in this frame, likely caused by stresses during ground handling (towing, parking, etc.). If left unchecked, this could compromise the aircraft's structural integrity.

When to comply:

First inspection: Within 100 hours of flight time after 19 June 1986, or at the next scheduled maintenance check—whichever comes first.
Ongoing inspections: Every 100 hours of flight time thereafter.
Stop condition: You can stop these recurring inspections once the frame has been reinforced according to Piper Service Bulletin 834 (a manufacturer-issued repair instruction).
