Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this is: A safety order (Airworthiness Directive) requiring specific Piper Tomahawk aircraft owners to fix a compass problem.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of Piper PA-38 Tomahawk aeroplanes with serial numbers 38-78A0001 through 38-78A0025.

What the problem is: The metal brackets and screws holding the magnetic compass can become magnetised over time. This causes the compass to give wrong readings (excessive deviation), which is dangerous because pilots rely on compass headings for navigation.

What must be done: Replace the existing magnetic compass mounting hardware with non-magnetic materials. The work must follow the instructions in Piper Service Letter No. 877 Part VI (the manufacturer’s technical guide).

When: Within 100 hours of flying time after 21 October 1979.

Why it matters: A faulty compass can lead to navigation errors and accidents. This directive ensures aircraft maintain accurate heading information for safe flight operations.
