What it does
This instrument is an airworthiness directive titled AD/PA-36/20 Amendment 2, dated for publication 3/2009 and made effective 12 March 2009. It imposes mandatory inspection and modification requirements applying to a narrow set of Piper PA‑36 (Pawnee Brave) aeroplanes. The directive identifies the affected models and serial number range in the "Applicability" paragraph and prescribes the inspection technique and corrective action in the "Requirement" paragraph. Specifically, it requires inspection of welds on the aft side of the gussets on the fuselage where the engine mount is attached, as depicted in Piper Service Bulletin No. 615, using dye check or fluorescent penetrant inspection procedures (or an equivalent). If cracks are found, the operator must install Piper Engine Mount Attachment Modification Kit No. 763877 or an equivalent before further flight. The directive also requires inspection of the forward side of the gussets during installation of that Kit, using the same inspection methods. The "Compliance" paragraph ties the inspection timing to each scheduled inspection that issues a maintenance release. The AD excludes aircraft that already incorporate Piper Kit No. 763877 from its applicability, restricts serial number applicability to the range specified in USA AD 79‑12‑09, and references that USA AD. The instrument repeats that compliance with Amendment 1 constitutes compliance with this Amendment. The directive is signed by a CASA delegate (David Punshon), and the Background paragraph records the 1978 original AD and Amendment 1 issued in 1983, noting changes in applicability and the 2009 amendment’s narrower applicability and identification of the USA AD.
