Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This safety directive requires owners and operators of specific Piper aircraft to install a muffler clamp (a bracket that holds the exhaust muffler in place) according to manufacturer instructions.

Who it affects: Operators of Piper PA-36-285 model aircraft with serial numbers from 36-7360001 to 36-7560110 (these are "Pawnee Brave" agricultural planes).

What must be done: Install the muffler clamp following Piper Service Bulletin No. 489 within 100 flight hours after 31 May 1976.

Why it matters: Loose or failed muffler clamps can cause the exhaust system to break, leading to in-flight fires, carbon monoxide entering the cockpit, or engine damage. This prevents those failures.
