Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This is a mandatory safety instruction (called an Airworthiness Directive) for owners and operators of specific Piper aircraft.

What it does: It requires inspection and maintenance of the stabilator attach fittings (the metal brackets that connect the tail elevator control surface to the fuselage) on Piper PA-32 Cherokee Six aeroplanes.

Why it matters: The manufacturer found severe corrosion (rust) forming between the steel attach fittings and the fuselage structure. This could weaken the connection and potentially affect aircraft control.

What must be done: Aircraft owners must follow the instructions in Piper Service Bulletin No 856 to inspect and address any corrosion. This must be done:

At the next scheduled inspection after 7 May 1987
Repeated every year thereafter

Who is affected: Anyone who owns or operates Piper PA-32 (Cherokee Six) series aircraft listed in Piper Service Bulletin No 856.
