Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What it does: This directive requires owners and operators of specific Piper Cherokee Six aircraft to modify the engine cowling by adding a drain hole. The technical details are contained in Piper Service Bulletin No. 580, which is incorporated by reference (meaning the law adopts that manufacturer's document as the standard to follow).

Who it affects: Only applies to Piper PA32-260 model aircraft with serial numbers between 32-1 and 32-7700016.

Key requirement: The modification must be completed within 100 hours of flight time ('time in service') after 28 February 1978.

Why it matters: Drain holes prevent dangerous accumulation of fluids (oil, fuel, or water) inside the engine cowling, which could cause engine damage or fire.
