Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This is a safety order (an Airworthiness Directive) that requires owners or operators of specific Piper PA-31 aircraft to replace rivets on the elevator outboard hinge brackets.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of:

Piper PA-31 and PA-31-325 aircraft with serial numbers 31-7612040 to 31-7812055
Piper PA-31-350 aircraft with serial numbers 31-7652071 to 31-7852057

What must be done: The rivets on the outboard hinge brackets of the elevator (the movable tail surface that controls up/down movement) must be replaced following the instructions in Piper Service Bulletin No. 595.

Deadline: The work must be completed within 100 hours of flight time after 19 July 1978.

Why it matters: This prevents potential structural failure of the elevator hinge brackets, which could cause loss of control of the aircraft.
