Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This is a safety rule for Piper PA-31 series aircraft (twin-engine planes popular for charter and freight work). It mandates a specific electrical system upgrade.

What it requires:

Aircraft owners must install an ammeter (a gauge that measures electrical current flow) in each generator feeder line
This gives pilots continuous visibility of whether the electrical generators are working properly during flight

Alternative option:

Instead of separate ammeters for each line, a single switchable ammeter is allowed—but only if the pilot can keep it switched to monitor the generator lines for the entire flight (not just the battery)

Who it affects: All models of the Piper PA-31 series.

When compliance was required: Within 200 hours of flying time after 30 August 1974.

Note: An ammeter that can be switched into the battery line and each generator feeder line may be used provided that the switch can be selected to a generator feeder line throughout the flight.

Compliance: Within 200 hours time in service after 30 August 1974.
