Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This Airworthiness Directive mandates safety modifications for Piper PA-30 and PA-39 Twin Comanche aircraft to prevent fires during refuelling.

What it requires:

At fuel filling points: Install a reliable method to electrically bond (connect) refuelling equipment to the aircraft. This prevents static electricity buildup that could cause sparks.
On landing gear: Install clearly marked external bonding points on the main undercarriage or nose gear, suitable for attaching ground connections.

Who it affects: All owners and operators of Piper PA-30 and PA-39 series aircraft.

Why it matters: Static electricity sparks can ignite fuel vapours during refuelling. These bonding points ensure electrical continuity between the aircraft, refuelling equipment, and the ground, eliminating static discharge risks. Compliance is required immediately ("forthwith").
